The Epstein Files Explained: What's Been Released and What It Means
A detailed breakdown of the Epstein case documents that have been released, unsealed, or made public — what they contain, how to access them, and key takeaways.
What Are the "Epstein Files"?
The term "Epstein files" has entered public discourse as a catch-all for documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein criminal case. In reality, these documents come from multiple distinct sources and legal proceedings, each with different levels of verification and different contexts.
Source 1: Giuffre v. Maxwell Court Documents
The single largest tranche of documents comes from Giuffre v. Maxwell (Case No. 15-cv-07433, SDNY), a civil defamation case in which Virginia Giuffre sued Ghislaine Maxwell. This case produced thousands of pages of discovery materials.
In December 2023, a federal judge ordered the unsealing of previously sealed documents from this case. The releases began in January 2024 and contained:
- Deposition transcripts from multiple witnesses
- Flight log excerpts from Epstein's private aircraft
- Internal communications and correspondence
- Legal motions and briefs referencing various individuals
Key context for readers
Many names appear in these documents in contexts that do not allege wrongdoing. A person might be mentioned as:
- A social acquaintance
- A witness with no alleged involvement
- Someone who was contacted but never responded
- An individual named in passing during testimony about other subjects
Being named in the documents is not equivalent to being accused of a crime.
Source 2: FBI Records (FOIA)
The FBI has released records through its public vault in response to FOIA requests. These records include investigative materials from the FBI's probe into Epstein. Many pages are significantly redacted under FOIA exemptions.
These files are available at vault.fbi.gov and provide insight into the scope of the federal investigation.
Source 3: DOJ Releases
The Department of Justice has released documents through official press releases, court filings, and in 2025, a broader release of investigative files. See our DOJ Epstein Files topic page for full details.
Source 4: Criminal Case Files
Documents from the criminal proceedings — the 2008 Florida state case and the 2019 SDNY federal case — are partly available through court records systems. These include the indictment, bail hearing transcripts, and related filings.

Common Misconceptions
-
"A complete client list has been released" — No single comprehensive list of Epstein's alleged co-conspirators has been released. Various documents contain names in different contexts.
-
"Everyone named in the files is implicated" — Names appear for many reasons unrelated to criminal conduct.
-
"The files have been fully released" — Significant portions remain sealed or redacted. The full scope of the investigation is not publicly available.
-
"PDF versions are the complete files" — Various PDFs circulate online, but their completeness and authenticity vary. Always verify against primary court records.
